Sep Proposes Delaying the Start of the 2020-2021 School Year

The Ministry of Public Education intends to modify the school calendar so that children return to class before the end of the cycle

Faced with the uncertainty of not knowing when the quarantine will end, the Ministry of Public Education is thinking about when it will be convenient for students to return to classrooms.

Now the SEP proposes to delay the start of the school year , and proposed to the governments to modify the school calendar to bring forward the June summer holidays and try to start classes in mid-September.

The objective is to have the opportunity to regularize children and reduce the levels of school failure as much as possible, after the closure of schools due to the national health emergency due to the coronavirus.

The proposal will be analyzed

This SEP proposal will be addressed at the next meeting of the National Council of Educational Authorities (Conadeu) during the first week of June. It is intended that before the end of the school year there will be a face-to-face period, that is, that the students return to the classrooms to conclude the 2019-2020 School Cycle, although the school calendar has to be traversed.

Change in the school calendar

According to some sources from the SEP, it is intended to anticipate the summer holidays so that they start on June 26; The children would return to face-to-face classes in the last weeks of July or the first weeks of August so that they could be given diagnostic evaluations that allow them to know the conditions in which they will return.

From these exams, they will take face-to-face courses and the 2019-2020 School Cycle would end.

According to what has been explained.

The SEP is in the process of analyzing some alternatives, including terminating the 2019-2020 School Cycle after two or three weeks of having returned to face-to-face classes. The face-to-face return is necessary to avoid the backwardness of those children who have not had conditions to continue their study and carry out the diagnostic evaluation of all students

Back to the classroom

It should be noted that this return to face-to-face activities for regularization would occur, in each state, based on three factors: the return to the new normal as of June 1.

That the Covid-19 traffic light be declared green and the determination of local governments. Those who are going to resume work after June 1 will attend the campuses until the 26th, when summer vacation begins.

On the other hand, they would return at the end of July or the beginning of August, to have three weeks of classes and start the new school year in mid-September or early October.

In addition, the SEP stated that the return to classes can be given by state and not by municipality, that is to say that the entities return to the classrooms until all municipalities are at a green traffic light, although this does not occur simultaneously in all the Federal entities. And this still has no date, but it can be given, for example in August.

After completing the two or three week regularization period, the children would go on vacation for another week to return to school in mid-September or, if necessary, until October to start the new School Cycle 2020-2021, instead of doing so August.
