From a month to 4 years in prison is what the Chamber of Deputies has put on the table to punish those who abandon the elderly.

It is a reform that has been sought for a long time, as it seeks to stop the abandonment by children or grandchildren of those older adults who gave their lives to the care and protection and the plenary session of San Lázaro has approved it.

Enough of older adults abandoned on the streets of the country, the Chamber of Deputies approved with 464 votes in favor, two votes against and zero abstinences, the reform of the Federal Penal Code to punish with 30 days and up to 4 years in jail whoever abandons to an older adult.

In this modification to the reform of the Federal Penal Code in articles 335, 336 and 337, it is established that the crime of abandonment of the elderly will be prosecuted at the request of the aggrieved party, having the obligation to take care of it and in this way stop these acts in the family.

This modification specifies that whoever without justified reason abandons an older adult whom he is obliged to care for and leaves him without resources to attend to his basic needs, will receive a month to 4 years in jail or 180 to 360 days of fine, this was referred to the Senate.

Esmeralda de los Ángeles Moreno Medina, a PES deputy, affirmed that abuse and discrimination towards older adults has become widespread in the family and that should be considered an injustice, since in Mexico 16% of these people suffer abandonment by their children or grandchildren.

In addition, in the plenary session of San Lázaro it was also mentioned that the population aged 60 years or more is the most vulnerable social sector, because according to the figures, approximately 47% of them live in poverty, while 30 % suffer some type of abuse in their family.
