How we overcome isolation will depend on our attitude

How we overcome isolation will depend on our attitude

We are all taken by surprise, this isolation causes the coronavirus pandemic, but it will be our attitude that will help overcome it

The best way to face the crisis caused by the Covid-19 health emergency that could affect us mentally and physically, is to have a positive attitude towards it and for this it is important to properly inform ourselves and take the necessary measures to take care of ourselves, recommended Mtra. Claudia Valdés Castro, professor at the Department of Humanities at the Autonomous University of Guadalajara (UAG).

Mtra. Valdés Castro added that people’s attitude plays an important role when facing any difficult situation "and the outcome of the decisions we make in the present and future will also depend on our attitude", this during his videoconference "Influence of the attitude in coping with crises "in the virtual seminar" The ‘new normal’ in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic "organized by this institution.

Then he detailed that attitude is defined as a mental state of the human being and his willingness to respond (coping) to situations with which he relates (lives or interacts). Coping with difficult situations consists of the way in which you handle feelings and how our body reacts to those external impulses such as stress and anxiety.

Then he pointed out that “the situation of confinement due to the pandemic that affects the country has divided people; they all take a different attitude. There are those who are taking it in a positive way and others in a negative way, there are also those who see the positive and those, negative and vice versa, even those who ignore it ”, he said.

The reason why some people have taken a negative attitude could be due to various factors such as fear of getting infected, losing their job, the stress caused by not knowing "what will happen tomorrow", not being able to leave home freely, the inadequate handling of the information, the over information or losing the routine that was known.

"It could also be the lack of knowledge on the subject and that many people do not know how to handle stress, this is accentuated more when certain limits are broken that people consider ‘what is bearable’, when anxiety or a person is not handled well it faces the unknown and a decision must be made ”, he analyzed.

On the other hand, those who prefer to ignore the situation could be subject to denial, which is one of the basic tools that the human brain uses for survival and is generally born out of fear of facing reality, said Mtra. Claudia Valdes.

“This is not bad; It is a defense mechanism used by all, it is human and natural. Thus, they learn to tolerate or minimize, accept or ignore what is beyond their capabilities, express their feelings towards what is causing them stress, "he added.

To help us and help others, he recommended that the best thing is to know and accept what causes us fear or stress, inform ourselves, invite others to find out and follow the lines that the experts mark.

Another way is to realistically analyze what is happening and take a positive and realistic attitude: things are not perfect, but we can do a lot for ourselves and for others.

The doctor also mentioned other attitudes that people have had to overcome isolation in the best way and face the concerns that the pandemic brings with it. These include seeking fun, building confidence, being optimistic, developing or seeking social support, solving family problems, seeking spiritual support, attraction to demanding activities, good humor and relaxation, avoiding negative thoughts, and having effective and positive communication with others. .

He concluded that it is important to learn from the present and understand that life continues, despite confinement, and many positive actions can be carried out for the benefit of the community and oneself during this time; it all depends on how you decide to respond to what happens.
